Andrew Puzder, President Trumps’ nominee for Secretary of Labor, is unfit to serve in that position. The Secretary of Labor’s role is “to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights.” Mr.Puzder’s performance as Chief Executive of CKE Restaurants (the parent corporation of Hardee’s and Carl’s Junior) and his stated policy positions stand in stark contrast to that job description and amply demonstrate the danger his confirmation poses to domestic violence victims and survivors’ safety and economic security.

Mr.Puzder opposes policies that enable victims and survivors to leave abusive situations and gain financial independence. He opposes:

  • Paid sick and safe leave, which allows victims and survivors to access vital services and to go to court to obtain protective orders;
  • Minimum wage increases;
  • Overtime pay.

Mr.Puzder’s companies have toxic work environments that encourage gender-based harassment.

  • 66% of female employees at CKE franchises report sexual harassment.
  • Hardee’s and Carl’s Junior’s advertisements are notorious for their highly sexualized ads that objectify women.

Mr.Puzder’s own words demonstrate he is unfit to run the Department of Labor, which is tasked with defending and upholding workers’ rights. He supports replacing human employees with automated machines, because machines are “always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex, or race discrimination case.”
